Did Voldemort know what would happen when he died with a horcrux in place?

I was reading How would Voldemort restore himself from a horcrux? when a simple question occurred to me. To my recollection, throughout the entire series, horcruxes are only ever stated to prevent their creator from dying, with no specific mention of how this is achieved or what happens to a wizard who would have died without their horcrux. Clearly it would be much more useful to know that when you died, you were going to turn into this sort of spirit; you could probably pre-arrange to have your body restored to you within a week. Since Voldemort did not do this, I'm assuming he didn't know this, but I have no proof either way.

Prior to Voldemort, is there any canon evidence of what would happen to a wizard who died with a horcrux in place? From this, did Voldemort know he would become "less than the meanest ghost", and could have planned accordingly (and presumably returned to power much more quickly)?
