Was Thranduil really a poor battle tactician? [duplicate]

In the movie The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, I was struck by the sheer "stupidity" of this scene (at about 1:05 - 1:12 time) from the perspective of battle tactics:

Specifically, why would the elves...

Is there any possible, logical in-universe explanation for Thranduil's choice of tactics?

Out of universe I can understand the "emotional show of support" the scene gives to the audience with respect to the tensions between the races or simply poor choice by the director.
