Did bane really break batman's back?

In The Dark Knight Rises during the sewer fight scene we see bane lift batman up and drop him on his knee, reminiscent of the comic book scene where batman's back is literally broken. My question is are we to believe batman's back really was broken and if so, is the amount of time that passed for him to recover a realistic enough time for him to be fighting bane and jumping around in later scenes?
