if the dwarfs had there own battle of there kingdom then why was gimli part of the journey with frodo and the ring?

because i asked a question yesterday about why the lonely mountain and the dwarfs wasn't featured in the lord of the rings trilogy, and i got answers of how they were in there own battle. But if that was so, then surely Gimli son of Gloin wouldn't of been at the meeting with the council at riven dale.
