Why are dangerous substances transported outside the ship instead of just being dematerialized?

At various times in Star Trek, some sort of a bomb,or dangerous instrument is transported outside the ship so it can be destroyed safely

Why not just dematerialize it, and not rematerialize it, discarding the contents of the transport buffer?
