Why did Sauron (and before him, Morgoth) wield a mace?

As the question asks, why a mace? I suppose it doesn't matter too much in the end what weapon they wielded due to their physical stature and the powerful magic they possessed but I always wondered if there was a specific reason to choose a mace?

Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth, whence smoke and fire darted. Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away, as a 'lightning shoots from under a dark cloud; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed in the Northlands.

Wouldn't a weapon with a longer reach such as a claymore do more destructive damage as the Dark Lords would surely cut anyone, even when wearing armour, in half? Whereas a mace is more of a 'pummel-you-to-death' kind of weapon? Although in the LotR movies, I don't think any character would care what weapon Sauron used as long as he was miles away!
