Dumbledore always stressed the importance of tolerating and respecting all magical creatures.
Harry Potter did just that with Dobby. The elf first unsuccessfully tries to "help" Harry in book 2, yet despite Dobby's epic fails Harry still shows respect and admiration for Dobby... Harry even goes out of his way to give Dobby his freedom from the malfoys. After Harry has earned the complete love and admiration of the elf for granting him his freedom, Dobby begins successfully helps Harry complete the second task of the Triwizard cup, as he's not simply trying to injure a child into hiding, but helping a friend.
Dobby saves the whole bunch through through his unique magical access to Malfoy Manor.
Without Dumbledore, maybe Harry never destroys the horcruxes, but without Dobby Harry Potter doesn't make it alive out of Malfoy Manner, and Voldemort still has multiple horcruxes alive and well.
IMO, Dobby IS Harry Potter's greatest and most crucial ally in the entire series.
