What disaster befel the earth in "The City of Ember"?

Having only just watch the movie "City of Ember" and not having read the book, was there any mention of what disaster befell the earth that forced the creation of the City of Ember? The city obviously was a massive undertaking and not something hastily thrown together. Thank you.
