I can't give many details because this was 30 years ago, but I still remember this book being similar to one of my favorites, Weasel's Luck (Dragonlance: Heroes Volume Three). It was a fantasy coming of age book from a child's POV, with sneaking around, getting into trouble, family antagonists, sibling rivalry, and some heroic ending. Not much to go on, I know!
