Programming organisms to create structures

I don't believe we have this yet, so this should be still on topic here, though I think it is totally plausible. How close are we to programming organisms (probably bacteria, through DNA manipulation or another means) to build structures according to plan, either through secreting depositional materials (e.g., leaving a trail of cement in a planned pattern) or through growing and then abandoning body parts or dying (e.g., coral) in a planned pattern?
