Story id: we landed a man on mars, and then war stopped

I'm been trying to remember a short story. The gist of the story is that when we landed a man on Mars, war stopped.... but that we were about to land a man on Venus. Ring any bells? Obviously, SciFi... most likely "golden age" scifi...
