What's the first appearance of shadow-melding in fantasy?

Everyone who has played either Warcraft III or World of Warcraft knows that night elves have the ability to melt away into the shadows of the night.

Whilst re-reading the Lord of the Rings I found this excerpt:

When Frodo came at last up on to the flet he found Legolas seated with three other Elves. They were clad in shadowy-grey, and could not be seen among the tree-stems, unless they moved suddenly.

(The Lord of the Rings, Book II, Chapter 6: Lothlórien)

This is a surprisingly accurate description of how the Shadow Camouflage works in the Warcraft Universe.

One might argue that the Lórien elves's clothes give them the camouflage ability, so I'm not sure if this can be considered an example of shadow-melding.

Any way, my question is: what is the first appearance of Elves capable of shadow-melding as an inherent racial ability in fantasy?
