In Doctor Who's The Time of the Doctor, how is sound heard in outer space?

The premise of the episode is that hundreds of different spaceships from different alien species are brought to one place (Trenzalore, attracted to there from an unknown message sent throughout the galaxies in a sound pulse... but how can they hear the message, if sound cannot travel in space?
