Was the Lord of the Rings like the First World War?

It is known that Tolkien fought in the First World War.

His epic The Lord of the Rings has some major battles, which include pretty much all the people (and likewise), pretty much like the World War.

Could it be that Tolkien was inspired by the War for the epic? Are there any allegories in his books?
