invasion from spaceand mind control with martial artist protagonist

A book from many (20+) years ago involving some form of alien signal that is able to control humans. One scene I remembrr is with a martial artist practicing kata who gets attacked by a controlled human and has to break their limbs one by one - the controlled human doesn't feel pain... Any help appreciated
