Would Mace Windu have been held accountable if he had succeeded in killing Palpatine?

I was reading a couple of questions about the ethical and procedural details of Mace Windu's failed attempt to kill Palpatine on the spot.

That got me thinking. What if Windu had succeeded? Obviously, the galaxy would be a happier places (probably, anyway). But what would have become of Windu himself? Would the Jedi Council or the Senate hold some sort of hearings or investigation? Would he have been put on trial by either body (even if the intention was to clear him)? Would he have been at risk of removal from the Order or judicial punishment?

Obviously, the movies themselves probably don't provide very much detail on this, so I'm willing to accept EU sources that might shed some light on this if there's nothing more strongly canonical.
